"How Will People Sign Their Names?"
For several years I have questioned the time spent teaching cursive handwriting in 3rd and 4th grade. However, I haven't been able to find any research to back me up, so I mostly kept silent. Now the Indiana Department of Education decided that it is no longer compulsory. The article also states that there are 39 other states in the same position. Is Missouri one of them? More research for me.
Phil Hart has stated the position quite well in his blog http://philhart.edublogs.org/2011/07/09/how-will-people-sign-their-names/comment-page-1/#comment-111

New Beginnings
Well, it's time to start blogging. I've put it off as long as I could. Why? That is the question!
Do I really have anything important to say? Maybe not. But here it is anyway.
After retiring last year, I have found that the lifelong learner in me has not gone away. I still want to learn more about many things.
1. I'm going to continue keeping up with technology. At least I have the excuse that I teach a class at Crowder College called "Technology for Teachers". Otherwise, I'm just a geek, right?
2. I'm going to continue trying to improve my scrapbooking skills and finish those projects!
3. I'm going to learn to do something new. What that is, I'm not sure. But I will decide. I'll set a goal---Choose a new topic or skill by September 1, 2011. (I put the year because I could put that off indefinitely.)
4. I'm going to Tweet daily.
5. I'm going to Blog weekly.
6. I'm going to keep up with my favorite blogs weekly.
That's enough--maybe too much! But I do have time on my hands...
Blog you next week!
